The Year 2003 Memorial Day Classic, a premier track & field event, is celebrating its sixth year. The 650 Acathletes who competed in The 2002 Memorial Day Classic came to Kansas City from Illinois, Iowa, Nebraska, Arkansas, California, Colorado, Minnesota, Kansas, and Missouri. The event was televised by 13 cable TV stations, with a potential viewing audience of over 8.7 million persons.  Why is the Memorial Day Classic called an Acathletic® event, and why do we refer to competitors as Acathletes®?

It is an Acathletic® event because, the term "Acathletic®," emphasizes the relationship between academics and athletics.  An Acathlete® is an individual who participates in organized athletics and who is committed to academic achievement; one who seeks to further academic goals through athletic involvement.

An Acathlete® seeks to become a whole person, for the race is not always given to the swift, but to those who stay the course.

The term "Acathletic®" is a registered trademark of Acathletics®, Inc.

The Michael L. Carr Acathletic® Award was established to honor the former president and head coach of the Royal Knights Track Club of St. Louis, Missouri. Michael L. Carr’s special love for youth led him in 1959 to create The Royal Knights Track Club of St. Louis, Missouri, where he served as the president from 1959 to January 7, 2003 when he left this life. Michael L. Carr‘s dedication to young people went well beyond concerns for their athletic performance. Mike knew the importance of educational, he continually encouraged young people throughout St. Louis to apply the disciple they learned through sports to their academic life. Michael L. Carr’s dedication to education and athletics and his commitment to the Memorial Day Classic is why this ward was named for him.

Michael L. Carr’s legacy is great. When we first told Mike about the emphasis The Memorial Day Classic would place on academics, Mike made a commitment to bring the Royal Knights to Kansas City every year to celebrate Acathletics. Michael L. Carr kept his promise; he attended every Memorial Day Classic until his untimely passing on January 7, 2003. We hope that every young person who receives this award will honor Michael L. Carr by reaching academic height that he would be proud of.

Each track club is asked to nominate a female and male athlete from each age group for The Michael L. Carr Acathletic® Award. The nominee need not be the greatest athlete on your team. However, they demonstrate must that the disciple, commitment and goal setting necessary to be a successful athlete has been applied to make them successful students. The Michael L. Carr Acathletic® Award for each age group will be announced during The 2003 Memorial Day Classic. For more information, go to http://www.memorialdayclassic.org/award.
