ACATHLETIC®
SCHOLARSHIP
Much like a competitive athletic event, getting into college has and continues to be an extremely competitive endeavor. The Acathletic® Scholarship will help recipients gain a competitive edge on college admission. Scholarship recipients will be one of approximately 40 students who will qualify to attend a twelve week ACT or SAT Study Course to prepare them for those college entrance examination. Scholarship recipients will be able to attend one of several study courses located in or near their respective cities. These study courses will be offered annually through Kaplan, Inc., the world leader in test preparation. The course will strengthen student's basic skills and will prepare students for key components of the ACT.
Qualifications
Applicants must be high school juniors or seniors.
Applicants must have a GPA of 2.5 or above on a 4.0 point scale.
Applicants with a lower GPA will be accepted with recommendation from high school counselor.
Applicants must have a demonstrated commitment to educational advancement.
Applicants must demonstrate their commitment to community involvement.
Applicants must participate in a high school sport and other extra curricular activities.
Applicants must have participated in The Memorial Day Classic.
Application Deadline
Application will be taken on a first come basis until all scholarships are awarded.
Requirements
Each applicant must submit an Acathletic® Scholarship Application, which will be available after January 15 each year. You may also download from this site.
Each applicant must submit three letters of recommendation, one from each of the following: teacher, community person, and another person of your choice.
Each applicant must submit an official transcript.
Each applicant must submit a two page essay on why I should receive an Acathletic® Scholarship.
Kaplan SAT/ACT Course
A one-and-a-half hour orientation to the SAT/ACT and the college admissions process. The orientation is open to parents and/or guardians. Attendees will receive a free copy of the Kaplan/Newsweek How to Get into College Guide;
Assessment of strengths and weaknesses through three full-length computerized diagnostic exams, enabling students to practice their skills under timed-conditions;
Personalized study plans including extensive home study materials, math and verbal workbooks, flash cards, and additional practice tests;
Instruction in concepts, test-taking skills, and strategies for avoiding traps on the SAT/ACT;
Instruction in mastering vocabulary, sentence corrections, critical reading, analogies, math problems, and quantitative comparisons;
Extensive tracking, analysis, and performance feedback;
Strategies to overcome test-anxiety and manage allocated test time efficiently, making the test day experience more familiar and less intimidating;
Home-study kit, including homework and practice exercises; and
Access to local Kaplan Center's resources (extra practice exams, etc.).
Scholarship Value
The Acathletic® Scholarship has a value of approximately $700.
